AWTE BUSINESS INNOVATION AWARD FOR CEO
The British Travel Awards CEO, Lorraine Barnes Burton, has been recognised by the AWTE (Association of Women Executives UK) for her achievements since taking control of the awards programme four years ago. To meet the critera for the "Business Innovation Award" the nominee was required to show how their acumen had impacted on her business or industry.
Under Lorraine's stewardship the British Travel Awards has been turned around from a debt burdened operation in 2006/7 to a profitable enterprise the following year. Since then the company has delivered year-on-year success both in profitability and consumer reach.
Consumer voting was initially promoted through partnership with The Sunday Times. Once Lorraine took the helm, her professionalism and integrity became obvious and News International upped their involvement by promoting the British Travel Awards in their other national newspapers and online pages.
This provided a superb demographic mix of potential voters. In the 2011 awards 71,367 households cast 526,414 votes.
Lorraine also suceeded in securing high profile sponsors, including Lloyds TSB - headline sponsor for the past three years. But, her real triumph was in bringing Deloitte LLP on board to audit and verify the voting process thus confirming the complete integrity of the British Travel Awards.
In 2009 she further expanded the company by launching "TravelVision" as an adjunct to the voting programme. This has grown to become the largest study of UK consumer travel related behaviour. In 2011 21,204 responders returned 281,414 opinions on their holiday intentions in 2012.
This year Lorraine went onto launch "BTA Check In" a rich media, online consumer magazine. The third issue will be published on 27 January 2012.
